Soul Spaciousness

Audio Version: Letters to Soul Friends, Soul Spaciousness

Dear Soul Friends,

Yesterday, my husband and I took a walk along a woodland path not far from our home. It was a glorious summer morning. The smoke from the Canadian wildfires had lifted the night before when a northern wind blew and cleared the air. It felt like a blessing after the smothering air of the day before. After a while, we came to a meadow where a Swallowtail butterfly hovered over purple loosestrife seeking nourishment. It was mesmerizing to watch as the butterfly moved from one stalk to the next content to find the food it needed. The butterfly was not in a rush or consumed by an urgent agenda. Instead, it glided around offering the blessing of stillness and beauty. What was happening in that moment was enough.

Our souls offer similar wisdom. Be content with the moment. Notice what is before you and let it be enough. Be still and listen before rushing into the day. In the sixth chapter of the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus teaches, “Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin.” It is wisdom for the ages. Sometimes we simply need to slow down and enjoy the glory of creation.

In soul language, just being and waiting to see what might happen is known as spaciousness. It is a place within us that is open and free. We need spaciousness for soul wisdom to emerge and guide us along our life’s journey.

A few years ago, I took the above photo in the driveway garden at my old house. It was the only place in my yard that had enough sunlight to grow dahlias. I loved waking in the early morning and wandering out to see what had happened overnight. One day a monarch butterfly and a bee kept returning to an orange and yellow dahlia as I hovered close enough to take a photo. It meant standing still and waiting for a long time, but while I was waiting, a haiku came to mind:

Sucking on nectar

Bee and butterfly delight

Busy with being.

As you go through your week, may you be blessed by the gift of spaciousness and being. May you be delighted by stillness and discover the gift of listening for soul wisdom.

Deep peace to you,

Susan
