Trout Lily Blessing

Dear Soul Friends,
Spring has exploded in New England. The weeping cherry tree at the end of my neighbor’s driveway is in full bloom and two cherry trees down the street have graced the neighborhood with pink and white glory. A fragrant star magnolia tree is bursting with blooms filling the air with a glorious scent, and a massive weeping willow is delightful to watch as the light green leaf laden branches sway in the wind. Even the dogwood trees are beginning to bloom. It’s the time of year when my soul sings with thanks for the beauty of the earth.
Busy looking at the trees as I walked the other day, I forgot to look down. The brown leaves and brambles in the woodland beside the road seemed dull compared to the colorful trees, but my attention shifted when a yellow trout lily caught my eye. Stopping to admire the gift of its tiny flower and spotted leaves, I decided to wander along a different path deeper into the woods to see if I’d find more. Soon I stumbled upon a few more trout lilies poking up amid the leaves and even found a group of three blooming together. Just as I decided I’d gone far enough, I walked around a bend in the trail and an entire blanket of green speckled trout lily leaves were covering the woodland floor waiting to bloom.
As I stood looking at the glorious display of fresh green leaves, it occurred to me that soul messages have a similar pattern to trout lilies. As we start to listen for our soul’s wisdom, it shows up in little, sporadic messages. If we pay attention to those messages and honor them, soul wisdom comes more frequently offering insight and understanding to our lives. In time, as we cultivate a regular practice of quiet attention to our inner knowing, our lives become intertwined with soul’s story of grace and peace and our hearts are blanketed in loving compassion. It might be hard to imagine, but if we look for soul insights within our hearts, we’ll know it has arrived when we are filled with a sense of warmth and wonder.
It’s worth making the effort to wander into the depths of our souls. Soul is the energy that helps us to bloom.
As the mystic, Rumi, said, “When I am silent, I fall into a place where everything is music.”
As you journey through your week, may you be blessed by the gifts of Spring and may soul’s wisdom encircle you with light and love.
Deep peace to you,
Susan
