Soul Shimmering
Morning Light ~ photo by Susan Izard
Dear Soul Friends,
Outside my window, the soft golden hue of early morning light shimmers over the dew-covered grasses, blessing the earth with the promise of another warm, sunny summer morning.
A flock of robins have discovered a makeshift bird bath on the black tarp that we placed over a patch of grass on the left side of the yard to prepare a garden bed for next year. We plan on planting native willows next spring so that our daughter may harvest and use the willow branches for weaving baskets. The tarp is not pretty to look at, but the robins are delighted. Last night, a large puddle formed in the middle of the tarp and the robins are now fighting over who gets to take a bath first. Watching birds bathe is a fun way to start the day. They hop and flutter around until one or two of them jump into the puddle and flap their wings. When one bird has stayed too long, another bird swoops down to take a turn. I tried to get a photo, but I was unable to get close enough without disturbing them. I decided to return to my desk and let them have their privacy. It is enough to enjoy their early morning activity.
This week, my family and I are preparing for our annual vacation on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. All five of our grandchildren and their parents will gather for a family reunion. I can’t wait to watch my little ones splash in the lake like the bathing robins. It will be a time to rest and relax.
It will also be a time of reflection and contemplation. The lake has a way of being a muse for my soul. Last year I felt the nudge to write our Dear Soul Friends letters. For the next few weeks, I will be posting pictures and a blessing as I take sabbath time for contemplation and renewal. I have some exciting news to share when I return after Labor Day and look forward to another year of writing letters to you.
Dorothy Day, twentieth-century social activist and spiritual leader, said,
Food for the body is not enough.
There must be food for the soul.
As the days shorten and August light illuminates the summer harvest, may you find time for quiet relaxation. May you be blessed by the gift of life and may you know that you are encircled and encompassed in Holy Light and Love.
Deep peace to you,
Susan
